10 Foods People Tried While Traveling That Is a Must Eat Now at Home

One of the best parts of traveling to different regions of the United States and other countries is the chance to try different foods you’ve never had or even imagined. Food lovers on a travel discussion board describe the foods they encountered that made such a strong impression that they now eat them at home regularly.

1. Chilaquiles

This traditional Mexican meal consists of corn tortillas cut into triangular pieces, lightly fried, and covered with salsa and cheese. Typically eaten at breakfast, chilaquiles are served with beans and eggs.

2. Currywurst

A German street food, currywurst is made from small bits of pork sausage and spices and covered with a sauce made from ketchup and curry. Currywurst was created in the late 1940s and has since become one of the most-served dishes in Germany.

This dairy product has been around for more than 1,000 years. Skyr is mistakenly referred to as yogurt because of its similar consistency. Skyr is a versatile food served for breakfast, as a dessert, and as a snack. Its high protein count and abundant vitamins and minerals make Skyr healthier than many commercially available yogurts.

Ajvar is a native Serbian dip or spread that has become a signature food across the Balkans. Primarily made from roasted sweet bell peppers and eggplant, ajvar is a garnish for cheese, meats, and desserts. Still, as a side dish, it goes with almost anything.

Dakos, also called ntakos, is a salad from the island of Crete. This salad contains dried bread, chopped tomatoes, salted feta cheese crumbles, and extra virgin olive oil. One of the most popular foods throughout Southeast Asia is kaya jam from Malaysia. Kaya jam, also called kaya or coconut jam, is made from eggs, sugar, coconut milk, and caramel. It’s usually spread on toast and pairs well with eggs and coffee.

Another globetrotter in the travel discussion mentions their love of a dish they encountered while visiting the Middle Eastern country of Jordan: za’atar on pita bread. Za’atar is a blended seasoning made from coriander, cumin, marjoram, oregano, salt, sesame seeds, sumac, and thyme.

A staple of Middle Eastern cuisine, the herbs in za’atar can vary regionally and are used to season a variety of foods, including hummus and baba ganoush.

9. Bun Cha Hanoi

Bun cha Hanoi is now their go-to dish for a tourist on the thread whenever they visit a Vietnamese restaurant. Bun cha Hanoi has grilled pork meatballs, thin slices of pork shoulder, and rice vermicelli noodles. This meal comes with broth, sweet chili sauce, and fresh herbs.

10. Loco Moco

A classic meal from Hawaii, loco moco has various incarnations. Traditionally, it’s a layered dish made from a hamburger patty resting on a bed of white rice, topped with a fried egg, and covered in brown gravy.
