The best thing to do in the summer is to get outside and enjoy the wonderful weather. What better way to do this than to explore cities on a bicycle? This way, you not only get to take in the wonderful scenery and enjoy this sunshine, but you also get some exercise. Here are twelve bike-friendly cities in the United States to visit this summer. 

1. Portland, Oregon

Festivals such as Pedalpalooza and the World Naked Bike Ride fill the city’s calendar, and summer events such as Sunday Parkways Rides and Bridge Pedal. Not only does the city sport a busy biking schedule, but Portland has also invested in several pedestrian and bicycle safety measures to ensure that biking culture and bicyclists are kept alive. It certainly helps that Portland’s air is some of the cleanest in the country, as the city has managed to keep pollutants below unsafe levels daily.

2. San Francisco, California

Confined to the San Francisco Peninsula, this city is dense but compact, making short trips to work or recreational activities commonplace and perfect for traveling by bicycle. In an effort to maintain a safe transit system for cyclists, the city has invested in several initiatives and plans and has seen significant decreases in traffic deaths and increased bike travel.

3. Reno-Tahoe, Nevada

6. Asheville, North Carolina

With respectful drivers, plenty of bike lanes, and easy navigation, Asheville is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the United States. Bikers will love the combination of great mountain biking in the nearby Pisgah National Forest and the outstanding road riding along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Manhattan Waterfront Greenway will give you an entirely new perspective on New York City. This thirty-one-mile long loop trail takes riders along the East Side, through The Battery, into East Harlem, 83rd Street, and Midtown.
