In general, starting a travel firm is a rather straightforward endeavor. Unlike launching a brewery or a dispensary, opening a travel agency or a travel business doesn’t require a lot of legal paperwork.
Figuring Out If You Need A License
Licenses and certifications are not required in most places, but licensing laws differ from state to state and country to country.
For the United States as a whole, starting a travel firm does not require a specific license; nevertheless, state rules differ. A Seller of Travel license is required in California, Washington, Hawaii, Iowa, and Florida. Canada’s license requirements also vary by region, and an Air Travel Organiser’s License is required in the United Kingdom.
Choosing The Legal Form Of Your Company
General business licenses are required before starting any kind of business, in addition to specific permits.

Why did an LLC make the most sense? As he puts it, “We had no plans to go public or acquire formal investment.” As a result, our choice of corporate structure was influenced by the fact that we had a relatively simple organizational structure.
However, the structure of your company will be primarily determined by your business goals and the sources of funding you intend to use. A company may be a good option if you expect to raise money from investors, for example.
Choosing A Business Name And Obtaining A Federal Tax Identification Number
Formally naming your company (even if it’s just you working as a travel agent!) requires filing a “doing business as” (DBA) document. A Federal Tax Identification Number, commonly known as a Federal Employer Identification Number, must be obtained as well (EIN or FEIN). How are you going to get the money to start a new travel company?

Angel investment and venture capital funding aren’t completely out of the question when it comes to financing your travel business. In January of this year, Project Expedition was founded as an LLC and received a $300,000 seed round to help fund the development of our MVP (minimum viable product).
Costa Rica Vacations’ owner, Don Halbert, raised venture funding to start his business. One of our key partners, a venture capital firm, provided the initial funding for this business, he adds.
Set Up Shop And Hire Workers.
The next step is to lay up a strategy for launching your travel agency to the general market. For those who plan to open a travel agency, this part may be more relevant than for those who plan to operate as a travel agent from their home.
You will need to hire a certain number of people. For the time being, you may not require any unless you decide to expand your business.
Mike Liverton, CEO and founder of Leavetown Vacations, recommends looking into remote employees as well. The company’s primary headquarters are located in downtown Vancouver, where many of the company’s “Destination Experts” work from home, according to the company’s CEO.
You’ll also need to figure out where you’ll be doing business. If you’re going to choose a company site, don’t let foot traffic be the key deciding factor. Instead, think about your space requirements and the image you want to project.
While a physical location may be necessary in some cases, it isn’t always the case. No one from our hometown has booked with us, adds Scott.
In his own words, “We’re not a 9-to-5 operation that can be sidelined while I’m not here,” he says. “Families, conflicts and significant events occupy the life of the ADDISON personnel. As a result, we designed and built our company with the goal of being able to operate from any location at any time. My professional trips have taken me across the Atlantic, to Europe, the Caribbean, and even to my children’s sporting activities.
As he goes on to say, “We didn’t choose our business location, we chose a virtual site.” In the end, it all depends on your niche and brand; nonetheless, this is definitely a viable alternative to keep in mind.
Promoting And Launching Your Travel Company

If you think that all of your advertising efforts should be based solely on paid advertising, you’ll be making a big error. Social media marketing and guerrilla marketing strategies should take up a large portion of your time and resources.
According to Brady Hedlund, the founder of Life Before Work, “I began out eight years ago arranging backpacking trips to Thailand and promoting using purely lean, guerrilla marketing strategies.” In order to advertise my new business, I put together an itinerary and a website and then hit the streets of western Canada. He went to university campuses and handed out fliers and put up signs advertising his travel business because his target audience was 18-30-year-olds searching for an ‘adventure party tour.’
He says he hasn’t received a single call in over a year. However, the business picked up and began to grow exponentially at a time when I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Eight years later, we now have 35 full-time employees working in 18 countries. ”
As with all parts of launching a travel business, your marketing plan will be heavily influenced by your niche, the population you’re targeting, your budget, and your overall business capacity. However, combining paid advertising with other guerilla tactics (applied both online and offline) is likely to be beneficial to your campaign.
