I have visited seventeen American states and have lived in New Mexico for three years — not bad for an Englishman. New Mexico will always be special, though. My son was born there, and I plan to show him his birth state one day. A recent online post lists the American states Internet users fell in love with.
1. Washington State
I loved Seattle,” raves our first commenter. “The weather that October was exceptionally good — cold and breezy and no rain — and that definitely affected my impression of the city.” Nothing can prepare the first-time Seattle visitor for how spectacular the city looks, especially on a clear day when you can see all the mountains.
2. Massachusetts
One observer fell in love with Massachusetts, regardless of any beef others may have with it. We spent a week in Boston and a day driving around the state and into Maine and New Hampshire,” recalls the fan. Big fan of New England. Would move there.”
3. Louisiana
I have always wanted to visit the Bayou and sample Louisiana’s unique cultural heritage, gastronomy, and landscape. “I’ve been twice and plan on making it a recurring thing!” declares a visitor. “This is the only place I’ve been to for vacation that I’ve been back to for the same purpose — it is special!”
4. New Mexico
As I said earlier, the Land of Enchantment leaves its mark on you. It may feel like an American state, but it feels like a magical outpost — a dream-like frontier with a deep well of history. “Have you been in Taos when the sun rises or sets?” asks a kindred traveler. “The colors blend differently to anywhere I’ve been.” I think it is the sunsets; the inverted lava field of burning skies is spellbinding. “Albuquerque sunsets on top of the crest are just perfect,” adds another champion.
5. New Jersey
Huh? Did we hear that right? “Yes, I’m being serious. Some of my happiest childhood memories were our family vacations to Ocean City,” a long-time New Jersey vacationer replies. “Seeing the island appear as you drive in on the Bay Bridge releases such feelings of joy. Likewise, it always feels sad seeing it fade in the rearview mirror as I drive in the opposite direction.” To each their own, I guess!
6. South Dakota
“Spearfish Canyon is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been,” reveals a fan of what some stuck-up people call a fly-over state. “Roughlock Falls is breathtaking, but the entire area made us want to stay forever — except it’s South Dakota, and I can’t handle that much snow/cold.”
7. Upstate New York
I won’t pretend to have any special love for New York, but the upper Hudson Valley pulls at me,” states someone who enjoys New York State’s timeless rolling hills and mountains. “Yes! The Hudson Valley has sooo much to offer!” confirms another convert. “I don’t live too far for a day trip, so it’s somewhere I explore often.”
8. Kentucky
An Indiana native enjoys heading south whenever possible to sample some of Kentucky’s heartland. “I’ve spent a lot of time in northern Kentucky and just did a long weekend at Mammoth Caves,” he explains. “Different scenery for sure, but I definitely feel at home there.”
9. Tennessee
While most tourists pile into Nashville to enjoy its bustling music scene and fine cuisine, others escape into the mountains and valleys. “Friends and I would go a couple of times a year throughout most of our 20s,” recounts a veteran. “Rent a cabin, hike trails in the Great Smoky Mountains all day, then good beer and food all night.”
10. Colorado
The Centennial State has no shortage of admirers in the thread, which is no surprise considering Colorado’s visual beauty (the clue is in the name). Spent my honeymoon in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado,” adds the next contributor. “One of the best weeks of my life, so that’ll always have a special place in my heart.”

Traditions are, like every other thing, ephemeral. The inevitability of cultural shifts is constant with the passing of time, and with these changes often come the gradual erosions of binding values that may, sadly, bring back nostalgia for the times we wish we could have again. Come with us down the recollections of the good old days we may only continue to cherish in fond memories.

10 Biggest Culture Shocks Southerners Had Visiting the North in America
America is a divided nation — or so it would seem if we are to believe the news media, with their non-stop live reporting on the great social divide. We’ve been there before. Regardless, some Southerners still find the North a surprise. A recent discussion sheds some light on the matter, with people sharing their biggest surprises about their northern neighbors.
