Here are 12 of the best campsites in the United States.

1. White Sands Campground, New Mexico

In addition to providing absolutely mind-blowing views, White Sands Campground in New Mexico is also the site of the largest gypsum dune field in the whole world. And, it’s also home to the world’s largest collection of Ice Age fossilized footprints. The campground is an incredible place to stay, and it’s also a good central base for exploring New Mexico

2. Takhlakh Lake, Washington

Boasting elevation of 4,500 feet, Takhlakh Lake Campground is located in Washington, on the banks of Takhlak Lake and at the base of Mt. Adams. There are incredible views all around you, of the lake, the mountains, and gorgeous forests with plenty of trails to explore.

3. Many Glacier Campground, Montana

Found on the east side of Mount Glacier National Park, Many Glacier Campground is found in and amongst thick vegetation and nearby Swiftcurrent Creek and Lake. You’ll be able to enjoy views of Altyn, Henkel, Wilber, Grinnell Point, and Allen and Wynn Mountains nearby. 

4. Joshua Tree’s White Tank Campground, California

Located inside Joshua Tree National Park, White Tank Campground is surrounded by massive granite boulders. It’s known for epic nighttime stargazing, as it’s easily one of the darkest sections of the whole park. 

5. Wonder Lake, Alaska

On the banks of Wonder Lake, this campground epitomizes camping in Alaska, with low temperatures in the colder months and loads of mosquitoes when things get warmer. Most of all, the views of the lake are immense, as are the gorgeous mountains in the background. 

6. Devil’s Garden Campground, Utah

Boasting an elevation of more than 5,200 feet, Devil’s Garden Campground in Utah is found deep within Arches National Park in southeastern Utah. The campground is forested with juniper and pine trees in and amongst the red rock desert terrain. There are many hiking trails in the area too. 

7. Wild Willy Hot Springs, California

About 20 minutes drive from Mammoth Lakes, Wild Willy Hot Springs has at least six different natural hot springs in the area. The area is super undeveloped yet peaceful, so if you’re looking for some tranquility in nature, this is an awesome option. 

8. Assateague Island, Maryland

Enjoy the tranquility of the seaside and the crashing waves at Assateague Island Campground in Maryland, and spend your time exploring the marshes, forests, and coastal bay areas. But because you’ll be camping in the elements, there will be lots of insects and perhaps harsh weather conditions too, so be prepared!

9. Wildwood State Park, New York

Full of miles of undeveloped forest land, Wildwood State Park campground is located near Long Island Sound, making it the perfect place to enjoy nature, swim, hike, go fishing, and relax. There are plenty of picnic sites all around, and the campground offers equipment for hire (for fishing and so on) as well as information on the area for hiking and exploring. 

10. Bear Rocks, West Virginia

Offering breathtaking views of the Appalachians, Bear Rocks Campground in West Virginia is located high above Canaan Valley. It’s mostly surrounded by forest and gorgeous greenery, boasting panoramic views of the surrounding area. Campers can choose between being out in the open or in some of the more forested areas, often depending on the weather and time of year. 

11. Death Valley’s Wild Rose Campground, California

This first-come, first-serve campsite in Death Valley is an incredibly popular spot in the area – and for good reason! The campsite is located in the Wild Rose Canyon, near the Panamint Range, on the southwestern edge of the national park. 

There are some serious hiking trails all around the area, and the campsite is fairly rustic – with no toilets or dump station. However, you will have potable water, fire pits, tables, incredible views, and plenty of peace and quiet. 

12. Nordhouse Dunes, Michigan

Visit Nordhouse Dunes, located along Lake Michigan’s eastern shoreline, known for its variety of awesome hiking trails and epic scenery. This designated wilderness area is located between Ludington and Mastistee, within the Huron-Manistee National Forest. The Norhouse Dunes Campground is a beautiful place to go for a quiet, waterside escape in a place relatively untouched by humans. In addition to the gorgeous waters around you, you’ll also be surrounded by looming sand dunes in every direction – hence the name of the campsite!
