For experienced travelers, having the adventure of a lifetime while staying healthy is an acquired skill. Novice travelers need all the help they can get to stay healthy while exploring the world, and that’s why people recently came together in an online discussion to reveal tips and tricks for keeping your health a priority when going on an unforgettable trip. 

1. Practice Mindfulness

Traveling can be a stressful experience, so prioritize your mental health just as much as your physical health. Take a few minutes daily to meditate, practice yoga, or sit silently — your body and mind will thank you! 

2. Pack Nutritious, Healthy Snacks

Not only is this tip good for your health, but it’s also good for your wallet. “Pack healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, and granola bars to avoid the temptation of unhealthy snacks while traveling,” advises one traveler. The more snacks and treats you pack, the less you’ll be tempted by unhealthy food. 

3. Remember to Exercise

Regular exercise is vital to any routine, whether at home or traveling worldwide. “Try to incorporate exercise into your travel itinerary,” says one woman. “You can take a walk or jog around the city, explore hiking trails, or do a quick workout in your hotel room.” But don’t sleep on this tip — many travelers confess exercising is the easiest thing to skip.

4. Stay Hydrated

It’s easy to forget to drink enough water while traveling, as your trip’s exciting sights and sounds could cloud your thinking. A little water goes a long way — but you didn’t need me to tell you this, did you? 

5. Choose Healthy Meal Options

Many travelers express shock at how quickly their physical health deteriorates if they don’t emphasize eating healthy options when dining at local restaurants. Look for restaurants that offer healthy options like salads, grilled meats, and vegetables,” advises one traveler. “Avoid fried foods and sugary drinks.” Approach local street food vendors with caution, too – rarely are they a healthy option for a meal. 

6. Prioritize Sleep

Much like drinking enough water, prioritizing sleep can easily fall to the wayside due to the countless distractions you’ll encounter during your trip. While it is tempting to cut back on sleep to fit in more sightseeing, activities, and general adventure-seeking, getting a good night’s sleep each evening is crucial for safe and healthy travels. 

7. Plan Ahead

When embarking on any journey, planning as much as possible is vital to a successful trip. But, of course, you don’t have to plan out every part of your travels painstakingly — just plan thoughtfully! “Research your destination ahead of time to find out if any healthy options are available,” explains one man. “You can also pack exercise equipment like resistance bands or yoga mats if you plan to work out in your hotel room.”

8. Practice Good Hygiene

Everyday hygiene practices should apply anytime you travel. But, even if you’re on a trip of a lifetime, there is still time to take care of your body through regular bathing and common sense habits. Then, not only will your body thank you, but so will anyone who encounters you on your trip!

9. Don’t Drink Tap Water

This may go without saying, but don’t drink tap water! Unfortunately, not every country has the same modern plumbing and safe water regulations as the United States, so err on the side of caution and only drink out of sealed water bottles — even when brushing your teeth. 

10. Take Breaks as Needed

Sometimes it’s best to slow down and take a break occasionally. Any trip can be physically exhausting and mentally draining, so many travelers profess to be mindful when taking on too much. However, don’t be afraid if you need a day to relax in your hotel room or hostel! It happens to the best of us, so don’t be ashamed to recharge your batteries.
