In 1704, Jesuit friars arrived by accident at the present site of Mulege and, in 1705, founded the first Hispanic settlement, the Mission of Santa Rosalรญa de Mulege.
On October 2, 1847, the Mexican army covered itself with glory in Mulege, dealing a hard and unexpected blow to the American troops during the War of Intervention.
One hundred heroic patriots led by Captain Manuel Pineda fought the so-called Battle of Mulege, which resulted in an unexpected victory for the Mexicans, pushing back the American ranks.
To this day, this confrontation is commemorated with pride and joy.

Heroica Mulegรฉ (official name) is a town in Baja California Sur, in front of the Sea of Cortez.
The best-known geographical reference of the place is the Mulege River, at the mouth of which the town is located.

The prevailing climate in Baja California Sur is dry, and Mulege is no exception, all thanks to the desert surrounding the town.
However, the climate in Mulege is a little more varied due to the mountain range that runs through the town and provides a somewhat different atmosphere.
It hardly rains at all, and the meager 82 mm of the annual rainfall is more or less evenly between June and October.
The average temperature in Mulege is 23ยฐC, with January being the coolest month at 16ยฐC and July and August being the warmest at 31ยฐC.
Extremes can reach 9ยฐC on winter nights and 39ยฐC on hot summer days.

In front of Requesรณn, an island can be reached on foot, and even when the tide is low, you can see a strip of sand that directly connects the beach with the small island (like in the picture above).

Visit the Santa Rosalia de Mulege Mission
In 1705, Jesuit Father Juan Manuel Basaldรบa founded the Santa Rosalรญa de Mulegรฉ Mission and was in charge of the compound for a year, giving way to other missionary fathers until construction was completed in 1766.
By then, Father Francisco Escalante was in charge of the place. In 1828 the mission was abandoned due to the reduction of its population.
With the tourism boom in Baja California, the mission was restored, with an 18th-century altar with Santa Rosalia’s statue carried inside.
